Summary

The aim of the paper is to brief guidelines on hypnotic techniques for physic cians, anesthesiologists, midwives, nurses, and other hospital personnel, all of whom should have some basic training and practical experience in this field, to help them (a) establish hypnotic anesthesia as a substitute for drug-induced anesthesia and/or (b) employ hypnotic techniques as a supplement to normal drug-induced anesthesia in order to reduce the anesthetic dose required. In addition, this paper pleads the case for substituting chemical means of pain reduction by techniques of relaxation and fear reduction such as a autogenic training and hypnotherapy, in order for the patients to gain self-confidence and self-responsibility in their dealings with pain. The important role of purposely and consciously given positive suggestions in everyday work with patients by doctors is also stressed.
