Abstract

In the United States alone, spinal cord trauma results in over 7,000 myelopathies yearly (21,44). The single most determining factor in the cord-injured patient is the initial severity of the injury. The grim prognosis of serious injuries may be improved inasmuch as there is probably a critical time period during which the progressive pathophysiological sequelae of the initial trauma can be modified (7, 8, 15, 70).
