Plain carbon and low alloy steels
Modern artists have produced paintings representing Beverage cans. They presumahly felt that these objects were representative of our age, Both by their decoration and as a symbol of contemporary society. They probably did not realise that their manufacture can also he considered as a metallurgical milestone, since it has required a significant advance in the quality and cleanness of the metal employed (steel or aluminium) to achieve such reliable containers, whose weight has been reduced by 30 % in twenty years, by the use of ever thinner sheet.
