Abstract

Modern artists have produced paintings representing Beverage cans. They presumahly felt that these objects were representative of our age, Both by their decoration and as a symbol of contemporary society. They probably did not realise that their manufacture can also he considered as a metallurgical milestone, since it has required a significant advance in the quality and cleanness of the metal employed (steel or aluminium) to achieve such reliable containers, whose weight has been reduced by 30 % in twenty years, by the use of ever thinner sheet.
