Zusammenfassung
Als Sepsis (Septikämie) werden laut H. Schottmüller (Internist, 1867–1937) Krankheitszustände bezeichnet, bei denen aus einem Herd („septischer Herd“) konstant oder periodisch Mikroorganismen in die Blutbahn eindringen („septische Generalisation“) und dabei klinische Krankheitserscheinungen hervorrufen. Durch Streuung der Sepsiserreger in andere Körperregionen entstehen neue Herde („septische Metastasen“). Die Krankheit besteht also aus der „Trias“: Herd — Generalisation — Metastasen (Abb. 1.1). Der Begriff Sepsis wird für Infektionen durch Bakterien oder Pilze verwendet, während beim Auftreten von Viren, Protozoen und Würmern in der Blutbahn von Virämie bzw. Parasitämie gesprochen wird. Auch der Begriff Fungämie für das Vorkommen von Pilzen in der Blutbahn ist üblich. Eine passagere Einschwemmung von Bakterien in die Blutbahn ohne klinische Symptome heißt Bakteriämie.
