Abstract

The genus Vancouveria (family Berberidaceae) is distributed in shady, coniferous woods of the Pacific coasts of North America, from northern Washington to central California (Spellenberg 1979). This genus has only three species, V. hexandra, V. chrisantha, and V. planipetala. V. hexandra blooms from May to June, in open clusters of small (ca. 1.3 cm) white flowers on smooth stalks supported by leafless stems. The flower has six white sepals, six white petals shorter than sepals, one pistil, and six stamens. All sepals and petals are sharply bent back at the base. Leathery, pinnately compound leaves (10–40 cm long), divided two or three times into three-lobed leaflets up to 4 cm long are grown in patches (Fig. 1). In mild climates, V. hexandra is used in woodland gardens as an excellent ground cover. Native American Indians used them as crude drugs, but details are unknown. The morphology of this genus is closely correlated with that of the genus Epimedium (Stearn 1938), which has been used as a crude drug in China (Jiang Su Sin Medical College 1977a,b) and Japan (Namba 1980). Recently, it has been shown that the chemical constituents of V. hexandra are similar to those of the genus Epimedium (Mizuno et al. 1990, 1991a, 1992)
