Abstract

Hypericum perforatum L. (family Hypericaceae) (Fig. 1) is considered an important source of pharmaceuticals which occur in the aerial parts of the plant (Herba hyperici). The most important constituents are the naphtodianthrones, hypericin and pseudohypericin. These compounds are found only in certain members of the genus Hypericum, and are particularly prevalent in Hypericum perforatum. Herba hyperici also contains tannins, essential oil, flavonoids, and other secondary metabolites.
