Abstract

Here, and in the five chapters to follow, I will discuss the equipment needed for reaching and maintaining low temperatures, and start with cryostats for the Kelvin-temperature range in which the low temperatures are obtained by evaporating liquid helium [5.1–3]. An important aspect of our consideration will be keeping the evaporation rate of the cryoliquid as low as possible by optimizing the cool-down process and by minimizing the heat transferred from the warm surroundings to the cold parts of the equipment.
