In der Physik muss man oft ein Koordinatennetz über ein physikalisches Objekt, z.B. über die Erdoberfläche werfen, um eine Beziehung zum mathematischen Zahlentupel-Raum ℝn (hier ℝ2) herzustellen, damit man die Formeln und Techniken der Analysis auf das physikalische Objekt anwenden kann.
