Abstract

The discovery of high-temperature superconductors in 1986 by Bednorz and Müller [15.1, 15.2] started an explosive growth worldwide of the research and development activities in the field of superconductivity. In terms of the immediate international scientific response, this event may be compared with the discovery of X-rays in 1895 by W. Röntgen, or with the first observation of nuclear fission in 1938 by O. Hahn and F. Strassmann. The new class of superconductors are cuprate perovskites with electronic properties which depend sensitively on the admixture of specific doping elements. Up to now the highest critical temperature T c was observed for the cuprate HgBa2 Ca2 Cu3 O8+δ with T c = 133 K at room pressure [15.3]. Many highTc superconductors have been found with T c larger than the boiling point (77,3 K) of liquid nitrogen. Clearly, this fact has important consequences for the technological applications of this class of materials and has already stimulated a host of engineering developments.
