Zusammenfassung

Kaum eine andere psychotherapeutische Richtung dürfte so vielen Mißverständnissen ausgesetzt sein wie die Verhaltenstherapie. Während die Selbstwahrnehmung der Verhaltenstherapeuten und die Befunde der Forschung übereinstimmend das positive Bild eines lösungsorientierten, pragmatischen, hilfsbereiten, mitfühlenden und häufig erfolgreichen Vorgehens zeigen, fällt die Fremdwahrnehmung oft undifferenziert oder gar negativ aus. Die wissenschaftlich orientierte Fachsprache verhaltenstherapeutischer Veröffentlichungen scheint manchem Beobachter ein technizistisches, gar gefühlloses Bild nahezulegen. Eine Auswertung amerikanischer Untersuchungen zur Akzeptanz der Verhaltenstherapie zeigt tatsächlich häufige Negativurteile (Heekerenz, 1991), wobei das Urteil z.T. um so negativer ausfällt, je weniger die Befragten über die Verhaltenstherapie wissen.
