Muskelzellen können — wie Neuronen — chemisch, elektrisch und mechanisch in Erregung versetzt werden; dabei entsteht ein Aktionspotential, das sich entlang der Zellmembran fortpflanzt. Sie enthalten kontraktile Proteine und verfügen — anders als Neuronen — über einen Kontraktionsmechanismus, der durch das Aktionspotential aktiviert wird.
