Zucker gelangte erst nach den Kreuzzügen über Zypern und Venedig nach Europa, wo bis dahin hauptsächlich Honig als Süßungsmittel verwendet worden war. Heute wird Zucker vor allem aus Zuckerrüben und Zuckerrohr gewonnen.
