Abstract

The main application of computers in health care systems concentrated on hospitals, the reason being that in early days they were, from an economical point of view, the minimum size of organizational unit required to yield some efficiency. With this restriction the influence of the computer technology on the development in medical informatics was significant. So it is recommended to explain the history, the status, and the future of hospital information systems with respect to the information technology and a look to the communication and information structure in health care delivery and finally with respect to medicine itself.
