Zusammenfassung
Die Geburtsstunde der Endokrinologie wird auf das Jahr 1849 datiert. In diesem Jahr unternahm der Göttinger Physiologe Arnold Adolph Berthold den Versuch, kastrierten Hähnen die Hoden anderer Hähne einzupflanzen. Er stellte hierbei fest, daß nach Einpflanzung dieser Hoden die kastrierten Hähne ihr sexualspezifisches Verhaltensmuster wieder aufnahmen. Berthold schloß hieraus korrekt auf die Existenz von einer oder mehreren Substanzen, die aus dem übertragenen Hoden über den Blutweg an anderer Stelle ihre spezifische Wirkung entfalten.
