Zusammenfassung
Die Idee der Sklerosierungstherapie von Beinvarizen entstand während des 1. Weltkrieges aus der Beobachtung heraus, daß zahlreiche intravenöse Injektionen des damaligen Luestherapeutikums Salvarsan eine Verödung der Armvenen verursachten. Die Notwendigkeit einer Langzeittherapie mit Salvarsan veranlaßte im 1. Weltkrieg den deutschen Arzt Paul Linser und den französischen Arzt Jean Sicard, unabhängig voneinander auf die Varizen des Beines auszuweichen, bis auch diese verödeten. Nach dem 1. Weltkrieg setzten beide Ärzte diesen beobachteten Verödungseffekt dann systematisch in der Behandlung der Varikose ein: Linser injizierte eine hypertonische Kochsalzlösung, während Sicard eine hypertonische Natrium-Salicilat-Lösung benutzte. So wurden Jean Sicard und Paul Linser zu den Pionieren der modernen Sklerosierungstherapie. Der bekannteste Schüler von Sicard, Raymond Tournay, baute diese Behandlungsmethode weiter aus und führte als erster die Stichinzisionen von intravenösen Koagula als Behandlungsmethode der akuten Varikothrombophlebitis ein. Er gründete eine Schule der Verödung, deren Erfahrungen im Buch „La sclérose des varices“ ihre Niederschrift fanden (Tournay 1985; Stemmer 1988). Im deutschsprachigen Raum wurde die Verödungsbehandlung vor allem durch die Arbeiten und Veröffentlichungen von Karl Sigg bekannt (Sigg 1975). Seit Einführung der Sklerosierungstherapie entstand zwischen ihr und der Varizenchirurgie eine oft leidenschaftlich geführte Auseinandersetzung um die jeweiligen Indikationen dieser beiden Behandlungsmethoden der Varikose, bis sich eine heute allgemein angenommene Indikationsstellung trotz Fehlens kontrollierter Studien herauskristallisieren konnten (s. unten).
