Zusammenfassung

In der Umgangssprache, aber auch in der praktischen Medizin werden Erscheinungen wie eine oft schmerzende Schwellung, die sich warm anfühlt, eine Rötung, Absonderung von Flüssigkeit oder Eiter, — die alle von Fieber begleitet sein können, — als Entzündung bezeichnet. In der unmittelbaren Erfahrung des Betroffenen wird eine Entzündung als Krankheit gedeutet; und tatsächlich kennt die wissenschaftliche Medizin viele entzündliche Erkrankungen. Wie der römische Gott Janus hat die Entzündung ein 2. Gesicht; Entzündungsreaktionen sind ein untrennbarer Bestandteil von Abwehrleistungen des Körpers, ohne die das Überleben in einer natürlichen Umwelt nicht möglich ist, da diese, z.B. in Form von Infektionserregern, immer auch schädliche Einflüsse enthält. Primär dient eine Entzündung zum Schutz gegen Angriffe von außen und von innen.
