Molybdate Hydrates with Alkaline Earth Metals

Abstract

This system has been investigated at 25°C, see Fig. 66, p. 178. The following solid compounds have been found to exist in stable equilibria with the solution: Mg(OH)2, 8MgO · MoO3.48 H2O, 4 MgO · MoO3 ·12 H2O, MgMoO4 · 5 H2O, MgO · 3 MoO3 · 10 H2O, MoO3. The “trimolybdate” 10-hydrate is the only polymolybdate in this sequence [1]. The paramolybdate 3MgO · 7MoO3 · 20H2O was found to exist only in a metastable equilibrium [2]. Because of the slow equilibration when starting from MgO, MoO3, and H2O, the initial materials in this investigation were the compounds MgMoO4 · 5 H2O, MgO · 3 MoO3 · 10 H2O, and Mg3[Mo7O24] · 20 H2O.
