Abstract
The genus Dendrocalamus, in the Bambuseae, consists of around 30 species, including D. asper, D. brandsii, D. giganteus, D. hamiltonii, D. hookeri, D. latiflorus, D. longispathus, D. membranaceus, D. merrillianus, D. sikkimensis, and D. strictus (Farrelly 1984). The taxonomy of these species is not well defined; however, a recent key to Dendrocalamus found in Nepal and Bhutan distinguishes five species in this region (Stapleton 1994). Dendrocalamus species are large tropical plants found throughout southeastern Asia, including India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Nepal, Bhutan, Vietnam, and Laos, as well as in Madagascar.
