Zur Geschichte und Entwicklung der Herzchirurgie

Zusammenfassung

Den Beginn der Herzchirurgie kann man datieren mit der ersten erfolgreichen Naht einer Stichwunde des Herzens, die Ludwig Rehn (1849 – 1930) am 9. September 1896 gelang. Mit dieser Pionierleistung schwand die Angst vor einem Eingriff am Herzen, den Billroth wenige Jahre vorher (1881) noch als eine Frivolität bezeichnet haben soll. Berichten doch auf Grund von Sammelstatistiken bereits 1903 Rikketts (Cincinnati) über 20 erfolgreich verlaufende Herznähte bei 56 Eingriffen, 1908 Peck (New York) über 140 Operationen bei Herzwunden, von denen 45 erfolgreich waren, und im gleichen Jahr Salamoni (Messina) über 160 operierte Herzstichverletzungen mit 62 Heilungen. Die damalige Letalität dieses Eingriffs von etwa 65% war bei dem meist tödlichen Verlauf einer Herzverletzung tragbar. Sie verringerte sich in den ersten Jahrzehnten unseres Jahrhunderts nicht nennenswert; 1934 berichtete Ramsdell (New York) in einer Sammelstatistik noch über eine 45%ige Letalität bei 428 Operationen.
