Abstract
Disturbances of the cerebral circulation are the third most frequent cause of death [349]. The largest group of these are ischemic strokes followed by intracerebral hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage, sinus venous thrombosis, and other cerebrovascular lesions (Table 17). Ischemic strokes have a high incidence of 150/100 000 and an estimated prevalence of 600/100 000. They present a challenge to prevention, acute treatment, and rehabilitation; however, compared with the management of myocardial infarction they have received relatively limited attention.
