Abstract

Bitumen is a residue obtained from the vacuum distillation of petroleum crude oil. Bitumen varies from a highly viscous liquid to a brittle solid, and consists of hundreds of chemicals, such as asphaltenes (high-molecular-weight aromatic and heterocyclic hydrocarbons), resins (polymers formed from unsaturated hydrocarbons) and aromatic hydrocarbons containing benzene rings. Distilled bitumen is used for road paving, while the harder air-blown bitumen is used for roofing. About 90% of the bitumen is used for road paving, 10% for roofing and waterproofing.
