Zusammenfassung

„Das Leben ist das höchste Gut und läßt sich nicht in Geld aufwiegen.“ Dies ist ein Grundsatz, dem wohl die meisten Menschen zustimmen würden. Auf der anderen Seite werden (notwendigerweise!) nicht nur von Individuen, sondern auch von Parlamenten und Behörden regelmäßig Entscheidungen getroffen, die eine Abwägung zwischen der Erhaltung und Verlängerung menschlichen Lebens und dem Einsatz knapper Mittel (Geld) beinhalten. Beispiele für solche Entscheidungen im öffentlichen Bereich lassen sich sowohl im Gesundheitswesen selbst finden als auch in vielen anderen Bereichen, vor allem in der Verkehrs- und in der Umweltpolitik.
