Abstract

The introduction of calcium antagonists has considerably extended the potential drug treatments of angina pectoris. Given on their own (Freedman et al. 1980; Hopf et al. 1982) or in combination with organic nitrates (Raizner et al. 1981) and/or β-adrenergic blockers (Lessem 1981) calcium antagonists may afford an impressive increase of exercise tolerance in many patients. This holds for patients with stable angina pectoris as well as for patients in whom anginal symptoms may be triggered and possibly intensified by additional coronary spasms (Freedman et al. 1980; Maseri et al. 1975, 1978; Parodi et al. 1981; Raizner et al. 1981; Schulz et al. 1981).
