Zusammenfassung
Ist es anschaulich klar, daß biholomorph (allgemeiner: topologisch) äquivalente Gebiete gleich viele Löcher haben? Es gibt keinen direkten Beweis für diesen Invarianzsatz. Die Eigenschaft „gleich viele Löcher haben“ wird durch die Lage von G in C definiert und ist zunächst keine Invariante von G. Um die Invarianz der Löcherzahl nachzuweisen, ordnen wir jedem Gebiet in C seine (erste) Homologiegruppe zu. Der Rang dieser Gruppe, die sog. Betti-Zahl von G, ist eine biholomorphe (sogar topologische) Invariante des Gebietes.
