Abstract

Annual herbs, glabrous or more rarely pubescent. Leaves alternate, exstipulate, 1–3-pinnatisect or pinnate with entire to deeply dissected leaflets. Racemes foliose to bracteose; pedicels without prophylls, sometimes elongating after anthesis. Flowers actinomorphic, hermaphroditic, penta-or trimerous, exceptionally tetramerous. Sepals valvate, shortly fused at base, persistent, sometimes accrescent. Petals distinct, contorted clockwise, marcescent. Androecium diplostemonous; anthers tetrasporangiate, dorsifixed, versatile, introrse in bud, becoming extrorse at anthesis. Ovary superior, syncarpous, ovarial portions of carpels distinct; style gynobasic, filiform, apically divided into distinct stylar branches with globose stigmas; ovules solitary in locules, ascending, anatropous, apotropous, unitegmic, tenuinucellar. Fruit usually separating into 1-seeded, indehiscent mericarps. Seeds exalbuminous; embryo straight, cotyledons thick, radicula short.
