Abstract
Thorny shrubs or small trees with indumentum of minute, 1-cellular hairs; myrosin cells present but glucosinolates apparently lacking. Leaves minute (1.5–2.2 mm long), alternate, scale-like, estipulate, early deciduous, on chlorophyllous, rigid, interlocking twigs terminating in sharp thorns. Inflorescences very short, axillary, umbel-like racemes with minute bracts. Flowers hermaphroditic; sepals 4(5), imbricate, free; petals 4(5), imbricate, free, slightly clawed; stamens 8(-10); filaments flat, with a surficial nectariferous appendage at the base of each; anthers deeply bilobed, slightly apiculate, dorsifixed, opening length-wise, antesepalous introrse, antepetalous latrorse; nectary disk absent; gynoecium syncarpous of 2(3) carpels; style subulate, with minute, slightly bilobed, persistent stigma; ovary on short gynophore, 2-locular, with many ovules per locule from a thick, axile placenta. Fruits subglobose berries with 1 seed in each locule or 1 seed in 1 locule; seeds black, hard, circinate, with curved embryo and scanty endosperm. x = 11.
