Abstract

Tree genera and species vary greatly in different geographic regions of the world. The greatest variation is found in tropical forests. For example, the number of species in the Amazon basin is about 500. Softwoods are distributed in the northern part of the globe, north of the Tropic of Cancer, while most of the forests south of it are composed of hardwoods.
