Abstract

Drug-induced pemphigus (DIP) is a rare but well-established variety of pemphigus. Several cases have been described worldwide since it was first reported in 1951 in Italy. Two patterns of association have been observed in DIP. In the first group the drug acts as the major aetiological factor, resulting in pemphigus which is usually mild and responds favourably on stopping the drug. In the other group, the drug only acts as a triggering factor in an immunologically and genetically predisposed individual, leading to the development of idiopathic pemphigus, the course of the disease not being influenced thereafter by the removal of the drug.
