Palaeoenvironmental Reconstruction Based on Lacustrine Organic Matter: Examples from the Tropical Belt of South America and Africa

  • Chapter
Environmental Geochemistry in Tropical and Subtropical Environments

Part of the book series: Environmental Science ((ENVSCIENCE))

Abstract

The organic matter present in continental lacustrine cores records several types of information depending on the abundance, provenance and preservation of the constituent components. In most cases, studying the bulk composition of sedimentary organic matter will unfortunately only provide information of a general nature that is difficult to interpret. This applies even when each constituent — due to its origin and characteristics — exhibits a particular chemical and isotopic composition.
