Abstract
Colombia is the largest Latin American coal producer and the seventh largest world exporter. It has large coal reserves, a fact that is of great interest for assessing its current state relative to planning its sustainable exploitation, in order to successfully assume the challenges of the next century. The coal reserves are distributed along the Andean mountainous chain and they are located in the Central Region as well as in the Colombian Atlantic Coast.
