Zusammenfassung
Zu den charakteristischen Erscheinungen des lebenden Organismus gehören nicht nur eine bestimmte, in sich geschlossene Form, ein bestimmter Aufbau aus anorganischen und organischen Stoffen, ein Stoffwechsel, der sich bis zu einem gewissen Grade Veränderungen in den äußeren Bedingungen anzupassen vermag, die Fähigkeit, sich zu vermehren und zu wachsen, sondern auch die Irritabilität, also die Fähigkeit, auf eine äußere Zustandsänderung (Reiz) mit einer Erregung zu antworten, ja u. U. sogar in bestimmten Zellen oder Zellgruppen selbst Erregungen zu bilden (Excitabilität).
