Zusammenfassung

Die endotracheale Intubation stellt den »golden standard« zur Sicherung der Atemwege dar, insbesondere bei kritisch kranken Patienten. Sie kann entweder auf oralem (orotracheale Intubation) oder nasalem Weg (nasotracheale Intubation) erfolgen. Mit der Intubation wird eine mechanische Verlegung der Atemwege zuverlässig verhindert oder beseitigt, gleichzeitig eröffnet sie die Möglichkeit, positive Drücke anzuwenden oder den Patienten an ein Beatmungsgerät anzuschließen. Darüber hinaus erleichtert sie die Bronchialtoilette und erlaubt die Durchführung diagnostischer und therapeutischer Bronchoskopien sowie die endotrachealen Applikation von Medikamenten.
