Abstract
Twenty-two medical museums were visited (Appendix 1), and all dry bones with changes thought to be due to certain infections were examined and photographed. All crania and long bones labelled syphilis and tuberculosis were included. A few specimens with changes due to other causes such as trauma, Paget’s disease, chronic leg ulcers, pyogenic osteomyelitis and tumours were recorded to widen the scope of differential diagnosis. Of the 674 specimens in this study, there were 424 crania and calvariae (Table 1 a) and 250 tubular long bones (Table 2a). The appearances of these specimens are recorded by over 2000 photographs (15 × 10 cm).
