Abstract

The origin of syphilis is perhaps the most controversial problem in the history of medicine. Increasing knowledge in this century has shown that enquiry must be extended to the origin of the treponematoses. There are four closely related human diseases due to infection by morphologically indistinguishable spiral micro-organisms, treponemes (Ouchinnikov and Delekorskij, 1970).
