Zusammenfassung

„Der Diabetes ist eine rätselvolle Krankheit.“ Diese Feststellung des antiken Arztes Aretaios von Kappadozien (um 81–138 n. Chr.) bestellt auch heute noch mit vollem Recht. Fast zwei Jahrtausende war die eigentliche Ursache dieses merkwürdigen Leidens im Dunkeln geblieben. Endlich glaubte man, mit der Entdek-kung des Pankreasdiabetes im Jahre 1889 und der Einführung des Insulins in den Arzneischatz ab 1922 die Ursache und die ätiologische Therapie des Diabetes gefunden zu haben. Da traten auf der Basis des neu erworbenen Wissens auch wieder neue Probleme auf, die der Forschung neue Rätsel aufgaben. Es sei nur an die Insulinresistenz, die Wirkungsweise des Pankreashormons im Fett- und Kohlenhydratstoffwechsel und neuere Erkenntnisse der Pathologie und Elektronenmikroskopie erinnert.
