Ätiopathogenetisch liegt dem Typ-I-Diabetes im Kindes- und Jugendalter fast immer ein zunächst relativer, später absoluter Insulinmangel zugrunde. Das macht den Diabetes zu einer lebenslang behandlungsbedürftigen Erkrankung mit täglicher Inbsulinsubstitution.
