Zusammenfassung
Träume sind das Resultat des Denkens während der Nacht (Aristoteles). Träume sind also, wie andere Denkinhalte auch, das Resultat der Informationsverarbeitung im Hirn (s. z. B. Antrobus 1978; Koukkou u. Lehmann 1980) und bestehen aus neu aufgenommener Information und aus früher gespeicherter Information, mit gewissen kognitiven Strategien bearbeitet. Offenbar ist das Denken während der Nacht anders als das Denken während des Tages, denn wir identifizieren nach dem Aufwachen ein Traumerlebnis als Traum und verwechseln Träume im Normalfall nicht mit Erfahrungen und Denken während des Tages. Die experimentelle Schlafforschung hat zwar gefunden, daß beim Wecken aus dem Schlafe öfters Träume erinnert werden, die dem Tagesdenken ähnlich sind (s. Foulkes 1978). Eine Theorie der Traumentstehung muß jedoch insbesondere das Entstehen derjenigen Träume erklären, die als solche von der Person erkannt werden auf Grund ihrer klassischen Charakteristika: nichtadaptive Realitätsferne, Bizarrität, Diskontinuität, Visualisierung und nicht zuletzt Schwererinnerlichkeit. Andererseits sind Träume nicht einfach durch allfällige Besonderheiten der Systemfunktion in den sog. REM3-Schlafphasen zu erklären, da ohne Zweifel typische Träume auch vor und außerhalb der REM-Schlafphasen im Nicht-REM-Schlaf gefunden werden können (Kuloh u. Lehmann 1964; Foulkes 1966).
