Zusammenfassung

Im Anschluß an die langwierigen und gefährlichen Anfänge bei Galilei und Kepler hat I. Newton in seinen Principia (1687) die Grundlagen der Mechanik terrestrischer und kosmischer Systeme geschaffen. In Verbindung mit seinem Gravitationsgesetz leitete er daraus in demselben Werk die Keplerschen Gesetze und viele andere Gesetzmäßigkeiten der Bewegungen im Planetensystem ab. Kein Wunder, daß die weitere Entwicklung der Himmelsmechanik fast zwei Jahrhunderte lang eines der hauptsächlichsten Arbeitsgebiete der großen Mathematiker und Astronomen blieb.
