Abstract

The Hodge conjecture is one of the most prominent problems of contemporary mathematics. In fact, it is one of the 7 millenium problems. Although it is formulated for arbitrary smooth complex projective varieties, abelian varieties are considered as a test for its validity. In this chapter we give an introduction to this subject.
