One of the most important lessons that a young scientist must learn is that good and innovative research is a delicate balance of many failures and few successes. This may not be the perception that some people have of experimental science because they only read research papers and hear presentations that highlight the successes. On occasion there are brief, passing references in these to things tried which failed, but the overall impression is that successes vastly outnumber failures. This perception of research success also adds weight to a false perception that many young scientists have.
