Abstract

The sesamoid bones of the hallux, so-called because they resemble a sesame seed, are small but constant bones located on the plantar aspect of the first metatarsophalangeal joint (MTP). Their pathologic aspects are often unrecognized clinically or radiologically. During antiquity, they were supposed to be the starting-point for resurrection at the Last Judgment because of their great strength [13]. Other myths depicted them as the “seat of the soul” [11].
