Abstract

It is very difficult to summarise all the information from a two-day meeting. I will therefore concentrate solely on the uresolved questions about mechanisms of proteolytic inhibition. As always, any scientific subject is filled with good news and bad news. The good news is that all of the speakers who discussed the haemostatic mechanisms are probably correct. There is no one single mechanism that causes bleeding after surgery and aprotinin is likely to work through a number of mechanisms; so each speaker has focussed on one aspect of the problem and all are, in general, correct. Now, for the bad news, we still do not know the fundamental haemostatic mechanism which causes bleeding after bypass surgery and there remain many questions to be answered.
