Abstract
The current climate has given new impetus to minimize blood usage during cardiac operations. In the literature, however, data about blood loss and blood use for valve replacements or combined procedures is sparse, usually only elective coronary revascularization procedures are studied. To facilitate debate as to which patient group would probably benefit most from blood-loss reducing strategies in cardiac surgery, we investigated retrospectively blood loss and blood usage in several patient groups collected in our database from 1985 onwards.
