Zusammenfassung
Porphyrine sind farbige Verbindungen, die ubiquitär im Pflanzen- und Tierreich auftreten. Strukturell bestehen sie aus 4 Pyrrolringen, die über Methinbrücken (= CH-) zu einem Tetrapyrrolsystem verbunden sind. Dieses konjugierte Ringsystem mit 11 Doppelbindungen bildet leicht Komplexe mit Übergangsmetallen. Während im Pflanzenreich die Komplexbildung mit Magnesium (als Chlorophyll) überwiegt, tritt Porphyrin im Tierreich als Eisenkomplex auf, der als Häm bezeichnet wird. Ihre Funktion im Zellstoffwechsel erfüllen die Häme dabei als prosthetische Gruppe von Hämoproteinen. Der Proteinanteil seinerseits bestimmt, welche Funktionen das Eisenporphyringerüst im Proteinverband übernimmt: so den Transport, die Speicherung oder Aktivierung von Sauerstoff im Hämoglobin, Myoglobin bzw. Cytochrom P450, den Abbau von H2O2 in den Enzymen Katalase und Peroxidase oder den Transport von Elektronen durch die verschiedenen Cytochrome der Atmungskette.
