Die Aufrechterhaltung der hochgeordneten, komplexen Strukturen aller bekannter Lebensformen, ihre unterschiedlichen biologischen Aktivitäten sowie ihre Fähigkeit zur Vermehrung hängen von einer ständigen Energiezufuhr ab. Lebensformen werden sich um so erfolgreicher durchsetzen, je besser die Energieerzeugung an ihre jeweiligen Bedürfnisse angepaßt ist und je mehr Energie zur Verfügung steht.
