Avian Migration

Abstract

The remarkable sight of birds migrating over Israel in spring and autumn was noted in the days of our ancestors: “Yea, the stork in the heavens knoweth her appointed times, and the turtle dove and the swallow and the crane observe the time of their coming.” (Jeremiah 8:7). Israel’s location at the junction of three continents, Europe, Asia, and Africa, has made it an internationally significant route of passage for migrating birds of prey and large soaring birds such as storks and pelicans, both in spring and autumn (Leshem and Yom-Tov 1996 a,b)
