Abstract

While it has been possible for more than 70 years to produce molecular beams with hyperthermal energies (see Chap. 1), the reverse process, the generation of slow atoms, has been out of reach for man decades. Attempts to use the gravitational field of the earth to decelerate the slowest particles of a beam with Maxwellian speed distribution (see Sect. 3.5) failed, as did efforts to slow down molecules in an arrangement of many inhomogeneous electrostatic, time-dependent two-pole fields in series (Stark-decelerator) [King (1950)]. Only recently. the latter approach has been successfully demonstrated [Bethlem (1899)]. The proposal of a rotating source [Hundhausen and Harrison (1966)], in which the circumferential speed is opposite to the speed of the effusing atoms and thus subtracted from it, has never been realized experimentally.
