Zusammenfassung

1931 konstruierte Michael Burmann, der als der Pionier der Arthroskopie in Amerika angesehen wird, ein Arthroskop, das in seinem Aufbau wichtige Grundelemente der heutigen Optiken enthielt. Die Schleuse wies einen Durchmesser von 4 mm auf. Nach Auffüllung mit Ringer-Laktatlösung wurden die Gelenke mit einer 3-mm-0°-Optik inspiziert. Burmann untersuchte 20 Hüft-, 25 Schulter-, 100 Knie-, 15 Ellbogen-, 4 Hand- und 3 Sprunggelenke an Leichen. Die Handgelenkarthroskopie war jedoch durch das ihm zur Verfügung stehende, zu groß dimensionierte Instrumentarium eingeschränkt. Burmann stellte aber bereits fest, daß es mit der Entwicklung von dünneren Optiken möglich sein müßte, auch kleine Gelenke arthroskopisch zu untersuchen (Burmann 1931). Zum damaligen Zeitpunkt gab er lediglich der Arthroskopie des Kniegelenkes realistische Chancen, auch an Patienten anwendbar zu sein.
