Backache is a symptom encountered almost daily in certain specialties, above all in general practice. Its high epidemiological frequency is well known (Wagenhäuser 1969). The great problem for the clinician is the large number and great variety of disorders which can hide behind the complaint of “backache”. (For a review of diseases of the spinal column see Mathies and Wagenhäuser 1971).
