Zusammenfassung

Der Konsum alkoholischer Getränke nimmt vor allem in der westlichen Welt stetig zu. Die Ursache hierfür ist noch immer nicht ganz geklärt: Faktoren wie Umwelteinflüsse, Alkoholverbrauch, Trinkdauer, Verhaltensnormen, der soziokulturelle Background, die Möglichkeit, Alkohol zu erwerben, sowie familiäre Hintergründe, genetische Veranlagung und die Stoffwechsellage eines Individuums beeinflussen den Alkoholkonsum. Ein großer Teil der Bevölkerung ist dazu in der Lage, in sozial angemessener Form mit der Droge umzugehen, andere Individuen hingegen haben größere Probleme und geraten in eine schwere Abhängigkeit, in deren Folge sich soziale, physische und psychische Leiden ergeben. Um eine ursachenorientierte Therapie zu entwickeln, versuchen Wissenschaftler herauszufinden, was den Unterschied zwischen diesen Menschen ausmacht: Führt die individuelle Persönlichkeitsstruktur oder vielleicht die biologisch-genetische Ausstattung zu einem abweichenden Trinkverhalten bzw. zu dessen Folgen?
